Through a series of seemingly incredible coincidences put in motion by the pastor’s phone call, Cass finds himself installed as the caretaker of an historic lighthouse in a town whose main source of income is its canine rescue league and other dog-oriented activities. Unknown to Cass, however, Pilothead Light’s boarding house has another tenant who’s arrived first—Marten Lawrie, a washed-up film star whose mental breakdown and dangerous outbursts have led his uncle/agent to work out a deal with his old friend, the Sound’s sheriff, Justin Sayers, to grant Lawrie asylum. A too-early arrival on the actor’s part brings him into direct conflict with the uninformed Cass, who nevertheless determinedly goes about setting up his new studio and pursuing a longtime but unfulfilled interest in culinary arts. In a parallel storyline, young Abel Cruz, whose frightening family legacy leads him to abandon his cousin’s hidden, seemingly lost-in-time estate on a mountain plateau in Bolivia, sets forth on a prayer-motivated journey of his own that will bring him across the paths of many whose destinies entwine with his—in the distant past, as well as the present and future. Cass makes the acquaintance of a number of unique friends, including local healer Cato St. John, young and fiery Father Mario, toymaker Uncle Peter Kresge, and master chef Gastón Desmarais, not to mention Cyrus Mbembwe, the so-called “psychic” detective whose sidekick, the Reverend Magnus, is a Neopolitan Mastiff, and Emerie Hartleib, the veterinarian whose assistant is a spotted hyena. And there are as well, of course, the dogs of Pilothead Sound—the alert and wary pets of many, but also the Special Dogs of the wolfish pack bred by the Sound’s Native American community for their ability to discern the supernatural. Abel meanwhile makes acquaintances of his own, embarking on a completely unlooked-for career as a cruise ship captain whose unexpected comrades eventually include (in DOPS II) the brigand Pilea and Tlatli, a fourteenth-century Aztec nobleman. Told in the leisurely but lyrical style of early 20th century works, the DOPS series is an epic adventure with a dash of fantasy and is by no means a “quick-read.” Packed with eccentric places that stretch the limits of credulity yet are perfectly natural, it is populated with characters so real they’ll come to seem like family.
