Lance cannot live an instant longer without seeing the Queen, he launches a daring plan to rescue her from the castle keep where she is held against her will, and together they flee Camelot. His burning passion will have to await however, as he encounters dastardly knights intent upon murdering the King, and a deadly priest who is out for vengeance.

Lance stopped. The sentry approached him from behind. Perhaps something had aroused his suspicions. Perhaps he'd seen Lance before and had only just realized who he was. Lance made ready to spin around and punch him as hard as he could. He would have to be out of the keep and away before De Sackville or anyone else found the sentry asleep on his stool in the corner.

"You forgot your basket, idiot. You're supposed to take it back to the kitchen."

Lance allowed his clenched fist to relax. He tugged his forelock again to appease the sentry and returned back to the first room. The frightened maidservant gave him the empty basket. He smiled at her to assuage her fears.

At that moment De Sackville emerged from the inner room and his gaze met Lance's. Now Lance saw him clearly for the first time. His scowling visage reminded Lance of a stone gargoyle. This and his black robe gave him a frightening appearance. The Father-Confessor wore a broad leather belt from which a sword hung, which was unusual for a priest. He also carried a coiled scourge in his left hand. Some said De Sackville was Arthur's conscience. Others claimed he was the Devil in human form. Seeing him now, Lance could understand why.

The maidservant had lowered her gaze and stood petrified. It occurred to Lance that no one looked directly at the Father-Confessor for fear of attracting his attention. They saw, not the man himself, but what he represented. Fear and pain, authorized by none other than the King himself.

Lance bowed his head and stepped back out of De Sackville's path. As the priest drew level with him, Lance bent his knees then brought his fist up fast, catching De Sackville under the chin and snapping his head backwards with the tremendous force of the uppercut.

De Sackville sprawled on the floor, knocked senseless. Lance put his hand over the maidservant's mouth before the girl could scream and whispered into her ear: "Your Queen wishes to be free. Will you help me?"
