The point of this book is to show that while we may only hear about the bad and criminal behavior of many of today’s players, the majority are like the people featured in this book. Yes, there are some who have no idea of how good they have it, who do not appreciate the gift they have received in the ability to play the game they love. You have that in every job, every industry, every society. But the majority of the players, because drama doesn’t follow their lives, their philanthropic efforts are not usually seen. It’s a much sexier headline to talk about a player dragging his unconscious wife into an elevator than to acknowledge his teammate might have started a foundation that provides food and clothing to inner city communities. Here are some examples from the book's contents: The Chris Webber Foundation was founded to assist troubled youth in Detroit, Michigan, Webber’s hometown. It offers scholarships to students striving to do their best both in the classroom and in the community. Jamie Storr: I had the face, as does every other child growing up, of diversity throughout schools and the community. It’s something that I approached as a professional athlete, to be the role model I never had. I never had a Japanese-Canadian person to look up to other than my mother. I was ashamed, when I was a kid, that I was half Japanese. That’s probably one of the biggest letdowns I look back on. If I could change one thing it would be, not to look at what other people see you as, the color of your skin or your heritage. Instead, be proud to be unique and stand up for it. It’s something I’m trying to teach these kids. The Jalen Rose Foundation also invests in programs that support single parent families. It works with community kitchens, providing meals for individuals and families in need and helps nonprofit organizations assisting children with their primary education and/or college goals. The foundation’s grants are distributed in Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis. The Karl Malone Foundation for Kids helps youth and their families with financial assistance. That includes paying their bills. He has donated $200,000 worth of supplies to Navajo Indians, paid off a mortgage for a family with four sick children, paid for a playground at a local elementary school for the handicapped, and bought vans for special- needs families. The Brian Grant Foundation bestows funding to a group of organizations in the South Florida community plus those in his former NBA hometown of Portland. Part of that support entails dinners for families involved with Mothers Against Gang Violence in Northeast Portland. Grant works closely with underprivileged children and non-supported elderly, residing in local rehabilitation centers. Founded in 1995, NHL Diversity offers support and unique programming to youth hockey organizations across North America that are committed to offering economically disadvantaged kids of all ages the opportunity to play hockey. Over 30 inner city volunteer organizations in various stages of development have been helped. Over 30,000 kids were exposed to unique hockey experiences.
