Now we were in very still waters. All the men on deck watched for the new shore. Frost hung from the serpent on the prow and every floorboard sounded and rubbed in the icy cold.

Above us as always was the great rainbow curtain. It is the mark of this strange land, and in all the seas I have sailed, I have never seen its likeness before.

Even by the standards of the giant men of the north the King is a massive man. He is as tall as a tree and wears hair as grey as iron that lies dreaded about his broad shoulders, each fixed in green bands and beads. His face is covered in a snow-coloured beard that falls over the fierce orange and black tiger-skin he wears over his breastplate.

The men call him: Gungnir.

While we sailed the shore the King told me: "Out of the many lands I have sailed, I have found none-land that warms my heart so, than my homeland of the North."

I replied pulling my skins to my neck: "I wish I could partake in some of this warmth you feel for your home my king, as then I would not be freezing to death ."

On saying this he laughed deeply and heartily; adding with a large hand on my shoulder: "When we reach the grey shores of my home. You shall be cold no more. For women of the North find no bed warmer than those whose mouths bring tales of adventure.”

A man one deck called out, that this was why the King bought, myself, The Scribe, so that I could recant many tales of their adventures. And this on deck turned into the greatest humour, for others called out then that the King always thought ahead. And most vulgar insults and theatre was enacted behind me with many men laughing and acting out what they had in store for the North women.

And once again I was witness to the Northmen’s extremely vulgar humour, which rarely consisted of anything beyond women, mead and gold.
